COMMUNITY PROUD

The RM of Edenwold has become a place to call home because of the quality of life that has been created.

HELEN AND BILL
WILSON

Helen and Bill Wilson have lived in RM of Edenwold since 1985. They have had a business there for even longer.

“There’s a reason we’re here and have been here as long as we have,” said Helen Wilson.

At the time in the mid-1980s when the Wilsons were looking for their place, Great Plains had begun building Emerald Park. Early on, Emerald Park had an auction house, agriculture implement dealerships and a gas station. The Wilsons rented a space in the auction house for their business.

Their interest in living and working in the RM grew from there.

“We were looking for a place to build a house for the family and business,” said Helen Wilson.

They were among the first to secure a lot in Emerald Park to construct the home they had decided to build.

Once they moved in to their new home, purchasing a lot in the industrial park to construct a studio for their business, Ag-Com Productions, was the next step.

“Being able to live and work in the same community worked out perfectly for us,” said Helen Wilson, who bikes to work. “We’re a mile away from our house which makes for an easy commute.”

“That was kind of a win-win for us. We did not choose Emerald Park. It chose us.”

LEAH CARD AND RANALD RASMUSSEN

Moving to the RM of Edenwold was a solid opportunity for Leah Card and Ranald Rasmussen to live life the way they want.

The two chose to live in a rural area because they appreciate the lifestyle it offers.

“We feel very autonomous and that's why we live in the country,” said Card.

But when they need support, they have found it from the administration and elected officials of the RM of Edenwold.

Five years ago, the two were looking for a rural property that fit their budget. They found one on the edge of the border between the RM of Edenwold and the RM of Sherwood that met their needs.

“We were looking for an acreage and that's where we happened to find it,” said Card.

“It was simply a location thing for us because we wanted to be as close to the city while (Rasmussen) was working.”

While others might not have recognized the acreage’s potential, these two saw what was possible and got to work making it their own. As they worked away at cleaning, demolishing and reconstructing buildings and elements of them, they were in regular contact with the administration of the RM of Edenwold.

Those interactions were unlike what Card had experienced living in other rural municipalities in the Regina area.

“In talking back and forth with the RM about those different things, they were just wonderful and easy to deal with,” said Card. “Their purpose is to serve the community, obviously, and that's the thing that they do.”

DON GORLAY

Don Gorlay has been a resident of the RM of Edenwold since 1987. At that time, he wanted to move out of Regina and was looking for a home in the area around the city.

“Emerald Park seemed to be very well organized,” said Gorley.

One sign of this organization to him were the architectural controls in place for those who wanted to build homes in Emerald Park in the late 1980s. Gorlay learned he would be required to submit a design for the home he wished to build and have that design approved. The home he had designed needed to be of a specified square footage and include an attached garage. The aesthetics of the homes being built needed to conform as well.

At that time, about 15 homes were under construction or had recently been moved into.

As for the annexation being proposed by White City, he doesn’t understand the reason behind it. He notes that annexation is for a municipality to acquire bare land so it has property it can develop. The land that White City wants to acquire is already developed with numerous homes and businesses paying taxes to the RM.

In his years of living in Emerald Park, Gorlay has been very satisfied with the RM of Edenwold.

“We get excellent service from the RM,” said Gorlay.
